Ragusa offers two very different towns: Ragusa Ibla is the baroque heart of the city, rebuilt on a rocky outcrop after the 1693 earthquake, while Ragusa Superiore is the new town, built from scratch in the same period and centred on the church San Giovanni. The new Ragusa is a sprawling city of 60.000 people, but Ragusa Ibla – given its position, is compact and easily walkable, even though there are plenty of stairs. The two cities are connected by bridges across a deep gorge, which makes the views even more spectacular.
Ragusa – Sea
Ragusa has the seaside resort of Marina di Ragusa, which is probably the most chic of all the south coast seaside spots. The comune has invested heavily in the promenade and the public spaces as well as the tourist marina and cycle paths. It is an ideal base for a seaside holiday, with numerous restaurants and services and a small year round population.
